Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to question certain rulings made by the official, following the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
